Officially I'm a hockey mom and we are a hockey family. From October to March we live and breathe hockey. Part of me secretly thought, that when we moved out to the country we wouldn't be so "involved" in the whole hockey scene. We would play rural grass roots hockey...that was easy. And well, yes it is, except out here, if we want hockey to happen we need to get involved. There aren't the crazy practice times or fund raisers, but we still need to volunteer for concession and for ice maintenance. And now, for the upcoming year, David has taken on the role as president of our little hockey association. I really truly don't know where that came from, but I think he will enjoy it. Not only do all 4 children play hockey, and we shuffle them to practices and games, both boys are referees for the Okotoks Referee Association and for the Calgary Central Zone Referee Association.. So yes...we are up to our eyeballs in hockey.
So where am I going with this post?
This past Sunday, the Calgary Referee Association had their fourth annual referee appreciation night. All referees and a guest were treated to special presentations from WHL referees and a Calgary Hit-men hockey game at the Scotiabank Saddledome. I hummed and hawed about going, because really, in my mind this was up Dave's alley, and I do enough in the name of hockey every other time. Nevertheless, I went, and I had the chance to hang out with my boys and my dad; who is a former hockey player. This is where I get to the good part.
While we were heading to our seats, we happened to walk past the Calgary's Hockey History Wall which is right next to the Calgary Flames wall of fame. Lo behold, we came upon my dad's hockey team picture! This picture hung in the Stampede Corral at one time and I would make my annual pilgrimage to the corral during the Stampede to seek out this picture. I really thought that with the floods this past June, it perished. But no!!! There it hung for everyone including my two boys to see. My boys were beaming and grinning ear to ear (so was my dad) My dad is a part of some wonderful history and my boys who LOVE hockey bear witness to this history.
So I guess, that I'm glad I went and spent some quality time with some special people...and I guess I'm OK with the whole hockey mom thing ;)
