Tips for Choosing Curriculum

I`m joining up this month with my fellow homeschoolers over at The Canadian Homeschooler and we`re talking about curriculum.

Truth. After twelve years of homeschooling, I still fumble through choosing curriculum. I'm no expert by any means, because when those glossy catalogs appear in my mailbox, I'm attracted to all the pretty things. I hear myself saying, "Just say NO Andrea!"  Don't even get me started if I have a chance to hit a curriculum fair! I'm like a kid in a candy-store, and by the end I can get overwhelmed!
So how in the world can I help you? Well? This is what I have learnt through years of trial and error.

1. Set clear goals. Write down those goals if you need to. Ask yourself, what are your goals in terms of academics, life skills and even virtues? As time marches on, the needs and goals of your family will change. Keep an open mind when setting your goals every year. Assess what will suit your lifestyle or season of homeschooling.

2. What is your child's learning style? Are they all about facts? Are they hands on learners? Take the time to just observe, and yes, through trial and error you will find something that your child will enjoy.

3. What is your budget? If you can't afford the big boxed curriculum, don't be afraid to buy workbooks, or download worksheets or even hit your local library for curriculum. Even used curriculum sales are a great way to "try out" material. If you finally find something you like and its worth investing in, then go for it!

4. Talk to other moms. Maybe there is something that works for them that may work for you. I can tell you, that this year alone, I've changed my Social Studies and Language Arts curriculum for both girls at least twice already just talking to a few moms. Let's just say I'm still window shopping ;)

5. Remember to start with the basics. Have a solid foundation for the three "R's" ( reading, riting, rithmatic) and build from there. Keep it simple, but remember you can build on to the concepts you want your child to learn.

6. If something isn't working for you or your child, don't be afraid to try something else. No curriculum is perfect! It's OK to switch until you find something that fits your child's needs. That`s the beauty of homeschooling.

Just remember curriculum is a personal choice. There`s no right or wrong when it comes to choosing your curriculum. I have spent years tweaking each of my children`s curricula. What my oldest son has used, has not necessarily been passed down to my youngest daughter...and that`s OK. Each child is different. Each child has their passion. Just remember to let the curriculum facilitate your child`s passion when you`re choosing.

  1. These are great tips! I love this: "Just remember curriculum is a personal choice. There`s no right or wrong when it comes to choosing your curriculum" AMEN.

It's all about trial and error (which too often becomes a really awesome book collection haha).

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has homeschooled for a long while and still doesn't have this curriculum plan sorted out. ;) hehe.
