Last week, when we checked on our bees, and we harvested a bit of honey and some of the comb...for a test trial. We got about about 1/4 cup of honey and a good 2-3 tablespoons of wax.
The wax sat for a few days on my kitchen counter, and the kids were munching on it like chewing gum, because there was still quite a bit of hone residue in it. I manged to squirrel away about a tablespoon of honeycomb, because I wanted to try and make some lip balm. I went on Pinterest, and found a few sites ( which I pinned if you're interested) and tweaked my recipe a bit from the 2 sites I looked at. One site was Eat-Drink-Love and the other site was One Good Thing by Jillee This was more of an experiment to see if I could make some...and if it worked I'd make more once we harvest more honey and comb in the future.
What you'll need:
1 Tbsp of bees wax
1 Tbsp of coconut oil
1/2 Tbsp of sweet almond oil or Shea butter ( I used almond oil)
Peppermint essential oil (or some other yummy flavor)
1/4 tsp of raw honey (optional)
Combine the bees wax, coconut oil and sweet almond oil in a small glass bowl and heat on medium low using the double boiler method.
When you get a liquid consistency remove from heat, and add the 1/4 teaspoon honey. Stir gently, and then add...well I added about 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil, because I LOVE peppermint.
Pour into a small container or containers with a lid
I just used a small Tupperware container I had in the cupboard. I'm sure if you wanted to get fancy, or maybe make a big batch to gift, you could find some small tins at a craft shop.
Let the lip balm cool, and enjoy! Easy Peasy!
