"Lost in The Barrens"

When I was Devin and Christian's age...probably grade 7ish,  I had to read "Lost in the Barrens" by Farley Mowat for English class. I HATED it.
Fast forward a few years...OK...more than just a few years...and I'm doing novel studies with my 2 boys.  Farley Mowat has become a perenial favorite for both of the boys...and...dare I say... for me as well.
A few years ago, we read "Owls in the Family", and thoroughly enjoyed it. This year, as our last novel study, I made the boys read "Lost in the Barrens"; which they enjoyed. I re-read it as well, and you know what? It's not half bad.

As the last project, I suggested that they make dioramas of their favorite scene/chapter.( Nothing like leaving the fun stuff to the 11th hour...right before your facilitator visits)  So you see,THAT was what the big mess in the garage was a few days ago. We had paint, plaster of paras, cardboard, and clay all over the garage floor.
The boys did an amazing job with their scenes. The pictures don't do them justice, especially with all the detail they put into it. Christian made the scene where the Jamie and Awasin are chuting the rapids and fall our of their canoe. Devin made the scene, where they are at the stone house recuperating from their canoeing accident.

Now...because the boys were busy doing their thing, Emilie HAD to get in on the action. She has been reading the Little House in the Prairie series. She LOVES this series. Her goal is to read the original Laura Ingalls Wilder books ( which we have) and move on to the Rose series, and the Caroline series. Pretty ambitious for a 7 year old!
Emilie, with a bit of guidance from Dave, made the cabin which Laura Ingalls Wilder lived in for the book "Little House in the Big Woods". She even got to use Dave's saw to cut some of the wood/Popsicle sticks! She did an amazing job as well, and her home decor includes blue curtains and yellow bedspreads.

Here are some pictures from these ambitious projects. Enjoy! And if you have a chance, let us know who your favorite authors are, or who you hated, but now appreciate!
