We're At It Again!

For the second year, St. Mary's University College, here in town, offers Junior High students hands on, and VERY affordable science classes in their labs, every two weeks.  Discovering Science
Devin attends them faithfully, and thoroughly enjoys them. University professors and grad students, volunteer their time, to teach kids( you don't need to be homeschooled) some amazing concepts. It's an excellent opportunity for kids to understand, and enjoy science.

Some of the projects/concepts this year to date, include Light and Optics, Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream, Detection of Iron in Cereal, Fat Content in Fast Food, Transformation of Energy, Rotary Steam Engine, Electrical Motors, and last night's project: Creating an Ecosystem.

So as you can  tell from the pictures below, the boys have new roommates :) Last night in class, Devin made a self sustainable ecosystem which includes 5 guppies, 2 snails, and 2 ghost shrimps. This is an open ended "experiment", which if it works, will maintain itself indefinitely. The concepts Devin learnt, include open vs closed systems, nutrient and material cycles, photosynthesis, trophic levels, habitats...and the list goes on.
The other 3 are just excited because we have new "pets" ( which I think they've already named).  This is just another amazing treasure we have here in the city. I truly hope, that Christian and the girls have a chance to eventually participate in these classes.

It really doesn't look like much...yet...

Making sure the new roomies are comfortable.
