Field Trip to Turner Valley

No really!!!
Before you think I've lost it...wait!
May 14, was the centennial celebration of the Turner Valley oilfield. Affectionately called "Hell's Half Acre" it was one western Canada's first commercial oilfield; and between 1914 -1942 it was the largest field in Canada. Turner Valley was Canada's first 100 million barrel oilfield by 1942, and produced 90 percent of the oil in Canada. As a result, this put Calgary on the map as well, as the oil capital of Canada.

The Turner Valley gas plant, which is now a provincial and national historical site, was operational between 1914-1985. This area, is not a dead oilfield. It still produces today as a result of oil recover methods and horizontal drilling.

Dave (who works in the oil and gas industry) was lucky enough to take our crew for this impromptu field trip which culminated with celebrations, activities, tours and food. They all came back beaming with excitement from all that they saw and learnt about another aspect of our province's history. Here are a few pictures courtesy of Christian and Dave.
