As I write this post, I have one ear tuned into the television in the other room, nervously listening to the men's hockey game against Canada and Latvia. See how I can multi task? All four kids just let out a celebratory yell as Canada scored! Finally!
| They may look relaxed but you can cut the tension with a knife! |
I thought I'd post a quickie on what I did to breathe a bit of life back into our Language Arts.
I have to admit I love journal writing. Yup...that's it...just plain ol' journal writing. When journals were on clearance at Micheal's a few weeks ago, I scooped 3 up for the girls and Christian. ( I have a journal fetish)
We haven't done journal writing in a few years, and honestly I've missed it! Instead of wracking my brain though on prompts I went to the trusty oracle Google and found 2 sites that have some pretty good prompts for the kids: Writing Prompts and Journal Buddies. I write out a list of at least 7 prompts onto yellow sticky notes, and the kids can choose what topic they want to write.
The "rules" for writing are simple:
1. Write...just write.
2. Don't worry about grammar or structure ( scary huh ?)
3. Fill the page...you can even write more than a page.
4. Neatness counts ( I'm anal about this...almost OCD about this point)
5. I get to read what they write but I don't pull out the red pen.
Easy Peasey huh? This journal writing is just supposed to reflect their style, thoughts and growth on different topics. Verdict? So far they're enjoying the writing because it exercises their freedom of creativity. And guess what? That's what homeschooling is all about!
( That and the fact they can watch the hockey game... which by the way Canada won)
