Dave, who grew up with soccer and baseball, but never played hockey, decided to join the 3 on 3 Tourney that is going on this week in Millarville. As he puts its, he's not the worst player, but he's not the best. So far again, besides being exhausted the next day ( late games that last until midnight) no broken bones.
Then there are, our children, who've practically been born with skates on their feet and hockey sticks in their hands. All four, started skating when they were three, and by five, they all were in the Learn to Play Hockey Program with the City of Calgary. Fast track...a few years, and we're out in Millarville enjoying the family atmosphere and community spirit of pond hockey every Saturday morning.
This past weekend though, we had some excitement, when our Sophie broke her leg. Yup! You read that right. She broke her left leg in two places; the tibia and the fibia. Clean breaks nevertheless, which means no surgery or pins. Basically, her opponents stick got stuck in her skate blade, and when he went to pull it out, he also pulled her leg which hit the board...hard. Sophie's scream has been ingrained in my soul. Our children yell, and scream when they are "hurt" or mad...but this? Indescribable. Devin, who was reffing the game, was as white as the sheet of ice. "Mom" he said, " I have never in Sophie's 12 years heard her scream like that." He was scared as we all were.
On a side note, as I write this tonight, four days later, I just want to acknowledge all the moms, dads, coaches and my boys' team mates for coming forward and helping us. It was certainly a great relief and true blessing to know that they had our back while we could concentrate on getting Sophie to the hospital and fixed up. I have nothing but heart felt gratitude for all these families and now know that moving out here was THE BEST thing we could ever do for our family.
So the good news is, Sophie has 2 clean breaks which will be reassessed at the Children's Hospital next week. The bad news is that she's out for 6 weeks with her cast. She's not a happy camper because not only does she miss hockey, she also misses her basketball tournament. It's hard for her to be tied down with this cast, and this will exercise her patience greatly. Maybe it'll be a good time for her to learn a new hobby.. ;)
