As a mother, you try and shield your children from certain aspects of media, and yet its hard, because it can be a learning tool too.
What really ticks me off, is how the media portrays beauty. I know, I know we've all heard about it and read about it, but now that I'm a mom of 2 teens and a tween, I find I'm really watching how they react to things out there. Things haven't changed since I was a kid. We still developed our own neurosis about how we looked, and some of us have taken those insecurities and tried to bury them very, very deep. But with teens, the cracks begin to show, and its a humbling experience for me to try and explain to my kids, that I never had the greatest self esteem. Chalk one up to all those Seventeen magazines I read ;)
Anyhow, here's a video worth sharing. It really hit home. I'm glad that someone as big as DOVE is doing this. I showed this to both the boys and to Sophie this morning.( I figured Emilie is a little to young to understand) It rendered them speechless...but in a good way. I'm hoping that it taught the boys to see that ALL women are beautiful, and I'm hoping that it teaches them to always help the females in their lives to look for their true God given beauty, and not dwell on what they think is negative. I"m hoping that it teaches Sophie to focus on the good, the beautiful, and not what she imagines to be negative about herself. Because in our eyes, she is MORE than beautiful, inside and out.
