Just this past spring, a good friend of mine, and myself, were lamenting how we needed to add a spark, to our kids everyday learning. It might have been the February/March doldrums, or near teaching burnout, but the wheels were turning for us moms. Then one day, we had that "A-HA" moment.
Fast forward to the summer, and we sat down for a brainstorming session. We were going to take a huge chance and set up our own book club and writing club for our kids, and whoever else wanted to join.
As of this past Friday, we had our first official book club meeting! Next week, we will have our first writing club meeting which ties into our book club theme of the month. To ease back into a routine of reading and writing, we started this month off with comics and graphic novels. The kids could read anything from Tin tin, to Archie. They could curl up with Calvin and Hobbes, or a classic like Moby Dyck. They could laugh out loud with Garfield and the Far Side, or question about the seriousness of our world with editorial comics.
It was completely up to them. They just had to come prepared to share in an open dialogue with their friends, about all the comics they read. How easy was that?
This small group of just 2 families ( but would you believe between our 2 families we had 6 kids?) had a lively discussion and bounced ideas off each other of different comics, the characters and all other aspects of what makes up good writing. Here's the kicker, it was all the kids. The moms sat back, listened quietly, and had tea. We were TOTALLY hands off. After the book discussion we offered a small snack, then got back at it, suggesting ideas for writing comics for next week's writing club. The energy and excitement from both the kids and the moms was amazing! I can hardly wait to see what everyone comes up with, and shares next week at our writing club.
